Banners dropped from top of Cabot Tower to demand better bus services
Protesters hung banners from the top of the Cabot Tower ahead of a march asking the West of England Combined Authority to take public control of Bristol’s local bus network.
Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate (BYS4C) and Extinction Rebellion Youth Bristol (XRYB) joined forces for the banner drop on Wednesday evening.
The green and blue banners read ‘Free buses’ and ‘Fair buses’, with protesters climbing the steps of the tower on Brandon Hill soon before it closed for the day.

Saturday’s march will start with a rally at 1pm on College Green, followed by a walk through the city centre to the WECA offices on Redcliff Street.
The demands of BYS4C and XRYB include free travel within the West of England for all those under the age of 25, all students and all apprentices; reversing the cuts to bus routes; and improving working conditions for drivers.
Nineteen-year-old campaigner Asha from Bedminster said: “We’re taking action this Saturday because we’re sick and tired of a failing bus network, where private control has led to frequent delays and cancellations, as well as dozens of routes being cut.
“It’s time for metro mayor Dan Norris to get on with the job of taking public control of our buses to deliver a cheaper, reliable, and sustainable bus network for the West of England.”
