BCfm: broadcasting from homes across Bristol to the world

By Martin Booth  Thursday Apr 23, 2020

A radio report broadcast from a spare bedroom in Warmley has gone viral in the Caribbean.

The report on BCfm was a family affair. Voiced by broadcaster Sherrie Eugene-Hart and produced by her husband Pat Hart, it was originally aired on the One Love Breakfast which Pat was presenting alongside his nine-year-old daughter India from their home.

After the news about how Dominica was dealing with the coronavirus crisis was broadcast, it was shared via WhatsApp by residents on the Caribbean island and quickly went viral.

The clip was shared thousands of times including by prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit, and played on three different radio stations.

“Family from Dominica called to say the piece had gone viral and the whole island was talking about it,” said Pat, who is also director and station manager at BCfm, whose usual studio is in Easton Community Centre.

“The three main radio stations carried the report simultaneously, and because everyone listens to the radio especially at times like this, everyone would have had access. Not to mention social media.

“It’s another great example of local radio helping to inspire others.”

The Hart family are not the only members of BCfm’s volunteer staff to be broadcasting from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
