Plans for network of inner-city goat farms
Urban goat-farming could be commonplace around Bristol if a new crowdfunding bid meets its target.
Street Goat wants to create a network of micro dairies on scrub land all around the city – starting in St George.
Working alongside the council, the group has identified its first site, an overgrown allotment on the side of a hill.
If they can raise £9,000 they can build a small 2-4 goat farm and start producing milk, cheese and yogurt.
“The goats will be cared for by a group that will collectively share the responsibilities, costs and milk,” the Street Goat group said. “But we want to do more than this
“We want to start micro dairies like this all over Bristol for everyone’s benefit.”
Street Goat say if they reach their target they will get it topped up to £45,000 through match funding which has been agreed by Just Growth, which funds “enlightened agriculture”.
The money will go towards creating a network that will support new sites to start up across the city.
“The Street Goat network aims to make urban animal husbandry easier and so connect more people with their food production,” the group said.
Street Goat is asking people to donate through their Crowdfunder website, where donors are promised incentives.
For £5, Street Goat will name a blade of straw in the first bedding after the donor. For £100 you can have a “hands-on goat-milking experience for you and your family friends”.
For £1,000 donors will get a professional photo shoot with your family and friends and the goats, with prints to take home.
