Big Jeff seriously injured in fire

By Martin Booth  Monday Jun 13, 2022

Bristol’s most famous gig goer has been seriously injured in a house fire.

Jeffrey Johns, better known as Big Jeff, was injured in the blaze at his home in Totterdown and is currently being cared for at a specialist burns unit in Swansea where he is in a stable condition.

Big Jeff is Bristol’s own musical barometer of taste who estimates he has attended more than 4,000 gigs and has recently exhibited his artwork for the first time.

Jeff was born in 1982 in Milton Keynes and moved to a village near Stroud in Gloucestershire when he was five, before moving to Bristol as an adult.

A family statement asks people “to keep Jeff in their thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time”.

Big Jeff is an ambassador for Independent Venues Week, is a DJ at festivals including Green Man and is a keen supporter of Bristol City Women.

As Beans on Toast sang in a song entitled Big Jeff: “He likes music more than anyone you know, he’s out every night in Bristol town dancing to the best new bands around… He’s something of a legend on the music scene, if Big Jeff’s on the guestlist then you’re gonna be pleased.”
