Body of young man found in Bristol’s Floating Harbour

The body of a young man has been found in Bristol’s Floating Harbour following a search for a teenager who disappeared in the water on Thursday night.

Police say the 17-year-old jumped in to retrieve a ball at around 11.15pm on Thursday (August 8) and appeared to get into difficulties.

A multi-agency response was launched, with helicopter and ground crews scouring the area for the teenager throughout the night.

The search was eventually called off at 2am, and members of the police underwater search team resumed searching on Friday morning.

Soon after 12pm on Friday (August 9), officers confirmed the body of a young man was discovered.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: “We have been involved in a multi-agency response to look for the body of a teenager who jumped into the water to retrieve a ball last night at about 11.15pm.

“The 17-year-old boy appeared to get into difficulties and disappeared beneath the surface.

“A multi-agency response was launched – including use of the Coast Guard helicopter – but the person was not found.

“It appears this has been tragic accident.”

Formal identification is yet to take place and police will refer the death to the coroner.
