Boris’ Bristol booze blunder
Boris Johnson’s visit to Bristol didn’t go quite to plan after he was admonished by a Sikh woman for making a reference to alcohol during a visit to the Nirman Sewak Jatha temple in St George.
The foreign secretary’s quip about a whisky trade deal with India was against some Sikh teachings which consider alcohol to be prohibited.
Sixty-two-year-old grandmother Balbir Kaur told Johnson: “I wouldn’t be wanting to put somebody in power who wants to put more alcohol in India which is causing lots of problems at the moment.”

Johnson was in town to support Bristol East Conservative Party candidate Theo Clarke.
Dressed in an orange turban, he was shown around the temple on Summerhill Road before addressing those inside and then being given a selection of Indian food to eat.
It is the second visit of a Tory grandee to their target seat of Bristol East this month, following prime minister Theresa May’s visit to Brislington.
Kerry McCarthy, the incumbent MP and Labour’s candidate for the constituency, said: “This is another stage-managed photo op that shows the Tories just can’t get it right in Bristol East.
“Boris Johnson and the parachuted-in Tory candidate don’t understand the local community or the people they are talking to. It’s not surprising that, when asked, Boris Johnson couldn’t name any of the candidate’s local pledges.”

Clarke, currently the director of the Conservative Friends of International Development, grew up in Gloucestershire and studied at the University of Bristol.
