‘Boris Johnson’s leadership is untenable’ – Liam Fox calls for PM’s resignation

By Ellie Pipe  Wednesday Jul 6, 2022

The MP for North Somerset has joined the growing number of Tories and opposition politicians calling for the prime minister’s resignation.

Liam Fox has called Boris Johnson’s position “untenable” as he withdraws support for the Conservative leader, saying he could not reconcile his loyalty to him with his conscience.

The Tory stalwart’s damning letter to the prime minister comes a day after the resignation of high profile ministers chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid over Johnson’s handling of Chris Pincher’s appointment.

Chris Skidmore, the Conservative MP for Kingswood, has accused Boris Johnson of “covering up” allegations about Pincher, who was suspended last week over allegations of sexual misconduct, as the raft of resignations continues.

Fox, who has represented North Somerset since 1992 and was secretary of state for international trade under Theresa May, said he has loyally supported every Conservative leader since he was first elected but is now compelled to withdraw his support for Johnson.

He said in his letter: “The events of recent days have convinced me that, unfortunately, you cannot lead the Conservative Party and, more importantly, our country.

“We have lost too many good people from the Government who could not reconcile their loyalty to you with their conscience. I am one of them.

“Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I withdraw my support for you as I no longer have confidence in you as our leader.

“I urge you to do the right thing and resign.”

Johnson has admitted it was a “bad mistake” to appoint Pincher, despite being aware of misconduct allegations against him but continues to battle to retain his position.
