Boutique hotel sign of times for St Paul’s
A boutique hotel is being planned for St Paul’s which could prove the icing on the cake of a turnaround in fortunes for Portland Square.
The long-neglected Grade I listed square could be returning to its former Georgian glory with the arrival of a number of luxury developments including the new 36-bed hotel in the north-west corner.
Trendy hotel firm Artist Residence have lodged a planning application with the council to turn the building at number 27 into swanky rooms with a restaurant, bar and cafe.
The group already has hotels in London, Brighton and Penzance.
They are looking to turn around the derelict property which was built as a single-use home when Portland Square was constructed in around 1800.
The building has been occupied by “militant squatters” who have vandalised the building’s original features, according to the hotel’s planning application.
The chain added: “The proposed development will create a new use and relevance for the existing buildings which will safeguard its future whilst also providing employment to the local area.
“The proposals will add activity and vitality to this area of Bristol. This development will make a highly valuable contribution to the local community both financially and socially.”
