Bristol24/7 reopens work experience programme for aspiring journalists

By Mia Vines Booth  Thursday Apr 21, 2022

The Bristol24/7 team is excited to announce that we are relaunching our popular work experience programme for 2022.

We will offer a limited number of editorial work experience opportunities throughout the year, open to anyone looking to start a career in journalism or to get experience in the world of work.

The programme aims to give those from marginalised communities the opportunity to get their voice heard and give them the skills to pursue a career in journalism and half of the spaces available are reserved for people not already at university or recently graduated.

Successful candidates will be able to work on stories that interest them and tell these in the form of writing, photographs, podcast recording or video.

Candidates will also have the opportunity to spend a dedicated hour with a team member to focus on their professional development. This could include refining a CV or cover letter, building a LinkedIn profile or writing pitches for articles.

As an independent media company, the team at Bristol24/7 is committed to breaking down barriers and opening doors to a career that is exciting, challenging and has a vital role to play in providing information, telling people’s stories, holding power to account and more.

We at Bristol24/7 are always open to new ideas on how to tell important stories about Bristol and work with new mediums.

The voluntary placements are unpaid and run for one week, from Monday to Friday, with working hours between 9am to 5.30pm. Placements will be split between our office at the Paintworks and working from home.

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for our work experience placements. We’re particularly keen to hear from people from a background that is not well represented in the media industry.

This includes if you are:

  • a person who experiences racism and/or
  • a disabled person and/or
  • a person who identifies as having a working class background and/or
  • a person who was eligible for free school meals as a child

Previously, those who have completed work experience with us at Bristol24/7 have secured full-time jobs at the company and gone on to further their careers with local and national publications, including The Guardian and the BBC.

We at Bristol24/7 are also keen to hear from people who are considering a career change at a later point in their life.

The work experience programme aims to support people from all backgrounds. Please let us know if you have any additional needs when you get in touch so that we can offer you the best level of support possible on your placement.

Any reasonable expenses incurred while working with us at Bristol24/7 will be reimbursed, including some support for travel to and from the office if necessary.

If you are interested in applying for the programme, please email experience@bristol247.com with the subject ‘Work Experience’ and answer the following questions.

Tell us a little bit about yourself! What are you currently up to, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

  1. Why do you want to do a work experience placement with Bristol24/7?
  2. What would you hope to learn from a work experience placement with us?
  3. How is local news and media important to you and/or your community?

We’re not looking for lengthy responses – a sentence for each is enough! You can send these to us in the form of writing, video or voice note. Alternatively, you can send us your phone number and we will call you to arrange a chat over the phone if that works better for you.

Our work experience is supported by our key partners: UWE Bristol, The University of Bristol, Unite Students, Weston College and Resonance.
