Bristol Academy beat Barcelona in famous win

By Chris Brown  Thursday Nov 13, 2014

Bristol Academy have defied the odds to dump European giants Barcelona out of the women’s Uefa Champions League.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg in Spain at the weekend, Bristol drew 1-1 at Ashton Gate tonight to secure their progress to the quarter finals for the first time in their history.

Barcelona, playing a similar short passing, high-tempo game that is the hallmark of their illustrious male counterparts, drew level on aggregate through Vicky Losada just before half time.

But with 10 minutes left of the 90, and the 2,500-strong crowd looking towards extra time, Nikki Watts tucked away a penalty to seal a 2-1 victory.

Bristol join Frankfurt, Brøndby, FC Rosengård, Glasgow City, Linköpings, Paris Saint-Germain, and holders Wolfsburg in the last eight, with the draw taking place next Wednesday.

But it’s a long wait before Bristol, the last English side in the competition, will take on their Champions League challenge, with quarter-finals not played until late March.
