Bristol artist creates Shaun sketches on iPad

By Josh Dyer  Tuesday Jul 7, 2015

She’s already raised £2,700 for The Grand Appeal through her iPad drawings, and is now aiming for more.

Artist Frankie Woods began drawing on her iPad during the Gromits Unleashed trail in the summer of 2013. Woods went against the grain of having pictures taken with the Gromits and instead started sketching the sculptures on her new iPad, achieving exceptional results.

Frankie began selling her sketches to raise money for The Grand Appeal. In exchange for a five-pound donation, Frankie sent an e-copy of the donator’s favourite sketch to them.

Frankie says, “my passion for art started at the age of nine and hasn’t gone.”

Frankie spent two full months sketching the Gromits, managing to tick off a little over 50 of the 80. Frankie says that she faced difficulties, especially the very detailed ‘Being Gromit Malkovich’.

When it was announced a similar trail would be running this summer, Frankie Woods jumped at the opportunity to raise even more money for the Bristol children’s hospital charity.

Frankie prepared herself with her iPad and a new stylus and got to work sketching the new Shaun in the City sculptures.

By the time the trail had officially launched in Bristol on July 6, Frankie had already painted around ten sheep. In her quest to sketch all 70 Shaun sculptures this time round, Frankie headed to London to get a head start, where the trail launched in March.

Frankie says, “I enjoy travelling around Bristol, watching families have fun hunting for the sculptures.

“My journey with the Gromits started at the museum, I sat for an hour drawing the Tutankhamun Gromit (Tutangromit I) and watched the world move around me.”

Frankie’s inspiration for her sketches is simple: “I wanted to take the beautiful sculptures and put them on something people can take around with them.”

Frankie wants people worldwide to witness what Bristol is capable of doing, but she wants to do it in a more unique than the thousands of Shaun selfies floating around the internet.
