Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2019, day 9: One25

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Dec 6, 2019

The streets are a dark, lonely and dangerous place for the women in Bristol who are trapped in sex work.

One25 reaches out to these vulnerable members of society and supports them to break free and build new lives away from violence, poverty and addiction.

The St Paul’s-based charity operates an outreach van that provides a vital lifeline for women on the streets and is often the first step they take towards safety and a healthier life.

The van drives around Bristol meeting women, who face violence, chronic ill health and life controlling addiction, offering love and support in a safe space. Volunteers offer food, condoms, hot drinks, rape alarms and more.

They build trust and encourage women to visit drop-in and caseworkers. The charity has launched a campaign to raise £25,000 to keep this vital service on the road.

The charity was visited by Harry and Meghan, the duke and duchess of York, in February 2019.

“Someone cares enough and values me enough to come out at night and find me,” says Jen, speaking about One25’s van.

Another woman, Zara, said to the charity: “One25 gives with such love: you just kept trying and you wouldn’t let go. When no one else could deal with me I had you.”

Last year, One25 supported 53 women to stop street sex-working and 44 women at risk were prevented from entering life on the street. The charity worked with more than 250 women to help them make the changes they chose.

One25’s vision is a community where all women are valued and able to live fulfilled lives without the risk of being trapped in sex work.
