Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2020, day 12: Wellspring Settlement

By Caitlin Bowring  Friday Dec 11, 2020

Wellspring Settlement is a unique space for residents of Barton Hill and the wider area to relax, create and socialise together, through life-affirming activities.

It seeks to celebrate the growth of its vibrant and diverse community, and is a key force for community development in East Bristol. It is managed by a committee of mainly local people and provides a wide variety of services.

Wellspring Settlement replaces the organisations of Barton Hill Settlement and Wellspring Healthy Living Centre who merged in February 2020.

The original Barton Hill Settlement has been a community hub for Barton Hill residents and visitors since its founding in 1911, and was set up as part of the University of Bristol. It is locally driven and seeks to reduce social isolation, including the causes as well as the effects.

The new vision was to bring together the strengths and skills of the two organisations to provide more for the local communities. The services focus on four key areas: community inclusion, strong families, community economic resilience and sustainability as an organisation.

Wellspring Settlement Family Centre drop-in groups are open to all parents and carers with children up to five years old, including those with disabilities or special educational needs. The centre provides safe and creative play areas both indoors and outdoors as well as many additional support services, one-to-one meetings and parent programmes.

The Network is a community development project run by Wellspring Settlement that works alongside people living in the Ashley, Easton and Lawrence Hill wards.

Over the past three years, The Network has developed a wide variety of community initiatives and activities. Some examples include cultural events, street parties, campaigns, reclaiming community spaces, developing community assets, direct action, group development, fun days and fundraisers.

The project is a partnership between Wellspring Settlement, St. Werburghs City Farm and Bristol Somali Resource Centre and is funded by the Bristol Impact Fund.
