Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2021, day 24: Nilaari

By Betty Woolerton  Thursday Dec 23, 2021

On the last day of our Bristol Charity Advent Calendar, we are celebrating a charity whose name, meaning ‘to have self-worth and value’, reflects their pioneering mission.

Nilaari is a charity that has offered ‘culturally appropriate’ therapeutic services for individuals of Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds for over two decades.

The Stapleton Road based organisation lends social support to those dealing with reoffending behaviour, mental health and problematic substance abuse.

By offering talking therapies and training to adults and young people all over Bristol, Nilaari strives to help people fulfil their full potential.

Whilst the organisation is based in Easton, Nilaari prides itself in making its services available to all communities across Bristol, including those that they describe as ‘hard to reach’.

Nilaari strives to “reach out to the BAME communities across the City, working towards redressing the acknowledged under-representation of these groups in services”.

The mental health and emotional wellbeing charity has run a number of important projects in 2021.

The Covid 19 Crisis Support Partnership seeks to addresses the wider effects of Coronavirus on the mental health and wellbeing of BAME people, and Weaver Bird supports the mental health needs of BAME migrant women, including refugees and asylum seekers who live in Bristol.

The team says: “As a street level agency in the heart of the most ethnically diverse ward in the city, one of our key strengths is our local knowledge and understanding of diversity.

“We believe that feeling heard and understood can help the healing process. Everyone who visits will be listened to and treated with respect and dignity.”
