Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2021, day 5: Bristol link with Beira
The friendship between Bristol and Beira dates back to 1990 when an agreement was signed to celebrate the end of apartheid in neighbouring South Africa.
The coastal city in Mozambique is bearing the brunt of climate change, adding to the challenges already faced by communities dealing with the long-term effects of historical conflict and destabilisation.
Bristol Link with Beira is a charity that promotes people-to-people networks between the two places to empower and benefit local communities and help to create sustainable change.
is needed now More than ever
The partnership facilitates learning and links between the two different cities to seek positive outcomes.
Caroline Pitt, project lead for Bristol Link with Beira, explains: “Bristol Link with Beira deals with the friendship agreement between Bristol and Beira in Mozambique, one of the least developed countries in the world where 50 per cent of the population live in poverty.
“Beira is a coastal city on the front line of the impact of climate change and in a ‘cyclone channel’. We have set up partnerships to empower and benefit local communities and generate links and learning between Bristol and Beira. Our fundraising and research is aimed at supporting the communities of Beira in health and education, climate change and energy, communities and civil society.”
