Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2022, Day 10: Integrate

By Hannah Massoudi  Friday Dec 9, 2022

Chaired by Janet Fyle, MBE, Integrate UK is a charitable organisation with the goal of equipping young people aged 12-24 with skills needed to make the most of their futures, while anchoring them in the charity’s core values of empowerment, integrity, creativity, representation and inclusivity.

Integrate’s reach is far and wide, with over 9,000 people taking part in workshops, talks and outreach programmes. Their media projects are even more influential, with a total audience of more than two million viewers.

Education is a big part of Integrate’s drive. They deliver workshops and training across a spectrum of themes and challenge issues such as body autonomy, gender and race equality, female genital mutilation (FGM) and xenophobia.

Young people, equipped with these skills, have been producing a huge amount of work through Integrate’s creative outlets, especially in film and television. This in turn allows them to build skills such as song writing, directing and stage production for use later down the line.

One film created by Integrate’s young people went on to win an award. Everybody’s Business, based around FGM, took home Silver in its category at the Charity Film Awards in 2015.

Their most recent film Smile More, follows the story of secondary school student and boxer Noah, who is constantly on the receiving end of racist bullying. Smile More is an educational resource for students and teachers that encourages conversation around racism within schools.

Integrate recently began their participation in the campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence created by the United Nations, kickstarting annually on November 25. The campaign sees activists raise awareness to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

One such project includes the film “What was she wearing?”, which discusses sexual harassment. This was accompanied by workshops in classes led on the same topic.
