Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2022, day 8: Project Zazi

By Mia Vines Booth  Tuesday Dec 6, 2022

“Know yourself, know your strength”.

This is the motto of Project Zazi, an organisation born out of the desire to focus on creating opportunities, building aspirations and empowering young black people and young people of colour.

Project Zazi is one arm of Off the Record, a mental health social movement for young people aged 11-25 living in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

The project supports individuals in exploring culture, identity and tackling inequality through a mix of one-to-one support and a variety of group projects, with the aim of offering belonging and security through sociable activities and learning new skills.

The aim of Project Zazi is to promote holistic wellbeing through the growth and development of young people of colour, creating lasting change that impacts individuals for the better.

Project Zazi offers everything from psychodynamic therapy and 1:1 CBT, to mentoring and wellbeing support and training for professionals.

They also run workshops and talking circles which centre around identity and belonging. Girl Talk, for example, is a series of workshops aimed at young women who align with the lived experiences of black people and people of colour.

The workshops recognise that mental health can be intersectional and builds safe and open conversations around this recognition.

Other workshops include Sisters’ Circle, a weekly group which inspires young Muslim girls of colour to dream big and break barriers, and Masculinity Groups, which explore patriarchy, misogyny, mental health, relationships, culture and self expression to help unpack the issues associated with masculinity, so that young men can become allies within their social spaces.

If you are interested in signing up to any of the sessions, head to Project Zazi’s wesbite.
