Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2022, Day 9: Incredible Edible Bristol
Food disparity and food waste are two things that can go hand in hand to have a real impact on communities. A 2021 report found that around one in 60 households in Bristol suffer from severe food insecurity.
However, Incredible Edible Bristol (part of the wider Incredible Edible Network) have stepped in to lessen the impact and improve the distribution of food to those in need.
By encouraging and supporting individuals, communities and businesses to grow their own food, Edible Bristol is enabling them to take autonomy over the food that ends up on their plates.
is needed now More than ever
“From back gardens and allotments, to community spaces, parks, and those lost, unloved corners, growing food is an act of defiance, of revolution and of system change. It begins a conversation and it brings people together through a shared connection,” said Sara Venn, founder of Edible Bristol.

In 2015, Edible Bristol, Grow Bristol and Bee The Change collaborated to devise an urban food growing trail (#vegtourismcomestobristol), running from Temple Meads all the way to Millenium Square, with food such as dwarf nectarine tree, strawberries and curly kale growing across some of the locations. Volunteers are all at the centre of this.

In addition to the edible gardens, they provide resources on topics ranging from compost, growing for wildlife, allotment growing and planting trees. With a talk recently being given by TV presenter, author and wildlife gardening specialist Kate Bradbury.
“Our aim is to share our set of growing skills with you to enable a truly edible city for both humans and those we share the city with.”
Currently, Edible Bristol have an education programme for schools, communities and young people in the works, with up to date news on their website along with any resources and videos.
If you would like to get involved, you can check out their events calendar for dates and locations of upcoming volunteer sessions, find a project here, or donate.
