Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2023, day 14: Bristol After Stroke

By Betty Woolerton  Tuesday Dec 12, 2023

Bristol After Stroke’s vision is to ensure that everyone who has had a stroke can get the help they need to regain confidence, achieve a level of independence and live a fulfilling life.

The charity, based in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, achieves this through a unique combination of practical, social, emotional and psychological support.

Formerly known as Bristol Area Stroke Foundation, it was set up by Professor Richard Langton Hewer, a local consultant neurologist at Frenchay Hospital who recognised the need for support and care for stroke-affected people and their carers and loved ones.

Bristol After Stroke now supports nearly nearly 1,000 people after their stroke each year in in the region with its stroke key worker service, support groups, courses and counselling.

In 2022, Bristol After Stroke was successful in being commissioned to provide six-month reviews and support to all stroke affected people in the region after their stroke and are now working as part of an integrated community stroke service and pathway.

In the same year, the charity nearly doubled its staff team and referrals and is expecting its reach and referrals to increase by approximately 150 per cent.

There are approximately 12,000 people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire who are living with stroke

Chief executive, Rebecca Sheehy, says: “We are extremely excited that in our 40th year we are now supporting many more people, in many more ways. This is a significant achievement. However, we know that people will continue to need our support for many years to come.

“In this 40th year we want to raise awareness and encourage more people to help us build our community of support, get involved and fundraise with us so we can continue to support people for the next 40 years”.
