Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2023, day 17: WECIL
WECIL, which stands for West of England Centre for Inclusive Living, is an award-winning organisation supporting Disabled people to live the life they choose.
Based in The Vassall Centre in Fishponds, WECIL is run by and for disabled people and provides support for more than 4,000 individuals across the region, from advice and advocacy to help with personal payments (giving disabled people more control and agency over their lives), young people’s services, employment and more.
All their work is rooted in the social model of disability which states that people are disabled by societal, attitudinal and environmental barriers rather than their impairment.
is needed now More than ever
In 2023, WECIL partnered with Bristol Women’s Voice to campaign for the importance of the a Community Toilet Scheme in Bristol.
The scheme, set up by Bristol City Council in 2019, aims to increase access to bathrooms across the city after many public toilets were closed, an issue that disproportionately affects women and the Disabled community.
Reflecting on the year, WECIL chief exec Dominic Ellison said: “2023 has been a challenging year for a lot of people for different reasons, but I‘m pleased to say that WECIL has maintained our voice and influence activity at a national level, and I remain thankful for the hard work and commitment of our team, our passionate volunteers and the board of trustees.
“Their continued hard work has enabled us to support Disabled people to achieve the independence, choice and control they deserve.”
