By Mia Vines Booth  Tuesday Dec 5, 2023

Based in Stokes Croft in Bristol, St Mungo’s is one of the UK’s leading homelessness charities.

They work in partnership with local authorities, health colleagues and communities with the aim of ending homelessness and rebuilding lives.

St Mungo’s has 18 services in Bristol across the whole city, supporting people at every stage of homelessness.

The number of people sleeping rough is up 26 per cent this year and 74 per cent since 2010, leading St Mungo’s to launch Last Night on the Streets, a winter fundraising appeal to raise vital funds.

It’s the charity’s biggest campaign of the year, supporting their work with around 30,000 people experiencing homelessness.

The team works in partnership with Bristol City Council to bring in additional support to homeless people, increasing its routine shifts and working throughout freezing temperatures to ensure that everybody who is on the streets is offered a safe and warm space to stay indoors overnight.

They also offer emergency accommodation and work with people individually to help them find a route away from sleeping rough and to plan their next steps towards longer-term accommodation.

St Mungo’s’ Bristol Recovery College and Putting Down Roots offer training and mentoring to help people fulfil their ambitions as they move away from homelessness for good.

David Ingerslev, St Mungo’s regional head in Bristol, said: “We know that sleeping rough is dangerous all year round, but freezing temperatures can pose a risk to life.

“Working in partnership with Bristol City Council, when the severe weather response is activated our St Mungo’s outreach team work day and night to offer everyone who is sleeping rough a warm space for the night.”
