Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2023, day 9: Re:work

By Ellie Pipe  Thursday Dec 7, 2023

With more young people than ever facing barriers to mainstream education, Re:work provides opportunities for them to learn skills and real world experience.

Based in the heart of Knowle West, on Filwood Broadway, the social enterprise offers work experience placements in its charity shop and woodwork workshop, as well as the gardening team that works to maintain gardens across BS4 and beyond.

Re:work also helps manage an allotment, alongside Knowle West Alliance, where young people can explore the outdoors and spend time in nature.

The aim is to raise aspiration, support and encourage integration with the local community and to ensure opportunities for employment and a brighter future for young people who might otherwise have very poor prospects.

Re-work offers work experience placements in garden maintenance

Speaking about the work, Ben Rawling, Re:work’s CEO, says: “More and more young people are facing barriers to accessing mainstream education. The reasons for this are complex, but the need is very apparent. According to government statistics, 21.2 per cent of pupils were consistently absent from school across the autumn and spring terms in 2022/23.

“To help address this, Re:work offers young people work experience placements in our social enterprises. Alongside the Knowle West Alliance, we are also fortunate to help manage an allotment where young people can explore the outdoors and spend time in nature. We build safe, nurturing relationships with young people, sharing our time and experiences to foster a warm environment whereby young people work as part of our team, free from the pressures they can face at school. By doing this, we see more confident, resilient young people with a healthy sense of self-esteem and self-belief, better equipped for education and the workplace.”

People can support the work of Re:work by visiting the second hand shop at 15-19 Filwood Broadway. Anyone based in Knowle or the surrounding area in need of garden maintenance or commercial grounds maintenance can get in touch for a quote. Find out more via: www.reworkltd.org.uk/.
