Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2023, day 10: Share Bristol

By Emily Brewster  Saturday Dec 9, 2023

Share Bristol has established a ‘Library of Things’, ranging from garden equipment to wine glasses, to loan out to Bristol’s community like a library book.

Currently based on Kingswood High Street – and in the process of opening a second ‘Library of Things’ in Bedminster – the project aims to make everyday items more accessible and affordable to local residents by offering them on loan rather than as one-use purchases.

An annual membership of £50 entitles each member to borrow any item from the library with no additional cost, saving the expense of handy tools like air pumps or pliers.

The ‘Library of Things’ concept has become increasingly utilised by communities in the UK, with 14 locations across London and Brighton.

First opened in May 2021, the project aims to strengthen the local community in Bristol and reduce the need to buy infrequently used items and tools by offering them to borrow, cutting down the city’s waste.

As a social enterprise, the non-profit charity is looking for support through volunteering, donations and items to help spread their ethos further around the city.

To get involved with Share Bristol and help create a street community, you can get in touch at hello@sharebristol.org.uk, or find out more on their website about becoming a member of the ‘Library of Things’.
