Bristol City Council approves zero road deaths motion
A motion to eliminate road deaths in Bristol has been approved at full council.
The motion, put forward by Bristol Green party, called for the council to adopt a target of zero road deaths by 2030.
Government figures show that over the past decade 75 people were killed on roads in Bristol.
is needed now More than ever
On average, 134 people are injured every year in Bristol from vehicle-related collisions.
Green councillor for Lockleaze David Wilcox said: “I’m bringing this motion because our city must be made safe for all road users — drivers, bus users, pedestrians and cyclists.
“People should not face risk of serious injury simply for moving around the city and the majority of injuries from collisions are avoidable — safe road design can prevent others.
Wilcox recommended lowering speeds on roads and separating types of transports, as well as promoting safer vehicles and educating users about safe driving practices.
He also recommended increase the number of average speed cameras, using the road linking Sea Mills and Bridge Valley Road as an example of a location with a high number of road traffic collisions.
Councillor Emma Edwards added: “This is a matter of public health, safety and justice. “Everyone’s freedom to walk around safely should be paramount.”
Conservative councillor Mark Weston supported the motion but said his party had concerns over funding, and that the scheme needed to be delivered in consultation with residents.
Weston also said he was glad the motion no longer included the proposal to remove huge billboards which could risk distracting drivers.
The ‘Vision Zero’ approach of reducing road deaths, which began in Sweden, has been adopted by other English councils in London, Blackpool and Leeds. The approach has also been supported by the AA and RAC.
