Bristol cricketers in #putyourbatsout tribute
Cricketers in Bristol have joined the global tribute to tragic Australian batsman Phillip Hughes by posting photographs of their own bats on Twitter, complete with the hashtags #putoutyourbats and #putyourbatout.
Gloucestershire Cricket posted a photo on their Twitter account this morning as the cricket world comes to terms with the loss of Hughes.
The 25-year-old died yesterday, two days after being struck in the neck during a domestic match in Sydney.
Doctors say his death was the result of a freak accident, when the ball caused an artery in his neck to break, leading to a massive bleed in his brain.
Hughes, who toured England during last year’s Ashes series, collapsed on the field moments after he was struck and never regained consciousness.
The online memorial, in which people put a cricket bat outside their doors and post a picture of it on Twitter, took off after cricket fan Paul Taylor, a dad from Sydney, tweeted a picture of his bat outside his front door.
The hashtag soon started trending on Twitter with current and former cricket stars, celebrities and fans from Australia to the UK sharing pictures of their bats.
The announcement of next year’s first class fixtures in England was cancelled yesterday, also as a mark of respect. The fixtures were released today instead, revealing Gloucestershire’s county championship, T20 and one-day fixtures for 2015.
