Bristol cycle to save refugees
Bristol cyclist Aaron Minnigin will lead a troupe on a sponsored cycle on Saturday to raise money for a volunteer lifeguarding group currently working off the coast of Syria.
Bristol Cycle to Save Refugees will be the first in what Minnigin hopes will be a series of events aiming to rustle up support for Proactiva Open Arms, a collective of Spanish trained lifeguards who have given up their day jobs to help save the lives of refugees fleeing the Syrian conflict off the coast of Lesvos and Chios.
is needed now More than ever
With a target of £900, the cyclists hope to raise enough to make a difference by cycling 20km, which is roughly the distance from Turkey to the Greek Island of Chios – a precarious journey that over 1000 people try to take by boat each day.
“I organised the cycle because, like many people, I’ve seen the heartbreaking footage of people risking their lives and their children’s lives simply trying to reach a place of safety,” says Aaron. “Images such as that of Alan Kurdi are devastating and I felt I had to do something to try and help.”
“As Bristol is a city of cyclists and was the Green Capital, I thought a sponsored cycle would be a good way to raise some money. I hope to organise more events like this in the future, hopefully on a larger scale.”
