Bristol-designed portable hotel room opens

By Laura Collacott  Monday May 22, 2017

Portable hotel rooms designed by Redcliffe architects Barton Willmore have opened for bookings in Wales as their winning design is brought to life.

The cylindrical, timber-framed pod named ‘Little Dragon’, draws inspiration from Wales’ mythology and industrial heritage and was one of eight designs to win a competitive tender which invited architects from across the world to design unique glamping units themed on the mythology, tradition and beauty of Wales.

It forms part of Epic Retreats – said to be Wales’ first pop-up boutique hotel, which comprises of seven other portable hotel rooms. It will visit two locations across Wales this summer and featured on the first episode of a new Channel 4 documentary ‘Cabins in the Wild with D Strawbridge’.

“It’s fantastic to see national coverage of this initiative, which showcases not only Wales’ beauty, but the power of individualistic and creative architecture to create something unique for visitors,” said Barton Willmore’s architectural associate, Tom Macklen, in the documentary. “We were very proud to have been one of the winners and it’s been great to see our vision come to life.”

Little Dragon and the other seven cabins can be booked in Southern Snowdonia from June 5 – 30 and the Llŷn Peninsula from July 10 -September 11.
