Bristol Energy launches 100 per cent green electricity tariffs

By Ellie Pipe  Monday Jan 13, 2020

Bristol Energy is putting its focus on renewable sources as the city begins a ten-year countdown to fulfil its pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The council-owned company will now be offering new customers a choice of three tariffs, each of which will contain 100 per cent green electricity and lower carbon gas, largely powered by wind and solar farms in the region.

Set up in 2016 to provide gas and electricity, and also to plough funds into tackling social and environmental challenges in the city, Bristol Energy has posted losses totalling £29.7m to date. Bosses, speaking at a Bristol City Council meeting in December, said the company is expected to break-even in 2023/24.

The firm is also turning efforts towards increasing its Bristol customer base after the quarterly update in November 2019 revealed only 11.4 per cent of its 104,600 residential customers are based in the city.

Speaking about the launch of new green tariffs, Marek Majewicz, managing director at Bristol Energy, urged people to switch to the city-based provider.

“As we enter a new decade, 2020 is a significant year for Bristol Energy,” said Majewicz.

“We’ll soon reach our fifth year of trading, and, in line with the progressing ambitious City Leap project, we’ve now hit the ten-year countdown to Bristol’s carbon neutral target.

“We are pleased to now only offer green products to new customers, encouraging green energy and supporting local renewable generators across wind, solar, hydro and bio.

“By sourcing electricity directly from renewable generators, we’re committing to supporting local businesses and communities who generate renewable power, by giving them a route to market and a good price for the power they sell.

“Our new products encourage customers to go green and do their bit for the planet. My message to everyone in Bristol is switch to Bristol Energy and support our city to become a cleaner, greener, healthier place to live.”

The three new green products launched by Bristol Energy are; BE Simply Green, BE Super Green and Big Issue Super Green.

Company bosses say all three products contain only 100 per cent green electricity and lower carbon gas, with a particular focus on sourcing renewable energy from local, South West and Wales-based generators.
