Bristol fastest growing city outside London
Bristol has grown faster than any other city outside the UK since the lowest point of the recession.
The city has recorded 19.2 per cent growth thanks to strong manufacturing, real estate and construction performance – although the finance industry has shrunk.
The growth is measured by the average Gross Value Added (GVA) – or the contribution to the economy – by each individual.
A report by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) placed Bristol in second behind London in annual GVA growth between 2009-2014. Between 2013-2014, Bristol was third with 6.5 per cent growth, behind Glasgow.
The ONS report, published on Wednesday, said: “Between 2009 and 2014 the economy of Bristol grew by 19.2 per cent, second only to London of the cities covered by this article.
“Strong growth was seen across a broad range of industries, with the best performances coming from manufacturing (81.0 per cent), real estate (62.2 per cent), agriculture (37.5per cent) and construction (33.4per cent). The only industry showing a fall over this period was finance (-13.1 per cent).
The GVA statistics are taken from the City of Bristol only, not including outer lying areas such as Kingswood, which falls under South Gloucestershire.
Business incubator SETsquared, based at the Engine Shed, Temple Meads, was named the world’s best in November.
