Bristol is gearing up for the Tour of Britain
The world’s cycling elite race into Bristol on Wednesday (September 10) as the Tour of Britain reaches the city.
Sir Bradley Wiggins will be among the riders battling to win the fourth stage of the tour from Worcester to Bristol.
Bristol24-7 will be covering the tour live between 2.30-4.30pm.

The Race

The Tour of Britain is the UK’s largest free annual sporting event. Some of the world’s top riders will be competing over 1,376kms which is broken down into eight stages. Stage Four will see the riders racing from Worcester to Bristol. They are expected to arrive in Bristol at about 2.45pm..
Best places in Bristol to watch the action
According to Bristol City Council the majority of the route through Bristol is suitable for spectators but they are advising people to avoid the parts of Kings Weston Road with no footpath.
Blaise Castle Estate
The riders race along Kings Weston Road for the final 10km of the race.
Shirehampton Road
The descent before a tight right hand turn onto Sylvan Way.
A4 Portway
A4 Portway before they reach Bridge Valley Road to take on the challenge of the King of the Mountain climb. Bristol City Council advises that while the Portway will be closed inbound for the race, outbound traffic will be unaffected. It is therefore recommended that no viewing takes place from the central reservation owing to the danger of passing vehicles.
Bridge Valley Road
Bridge Valley Road is where the professionals will battle it out for the King of the Mountains jersey. When they reach the top of the hill and they turn onto Circular Road.
Circular Road
The finish line!
Podium presentation will immediately follow the finish.
Road closures
The following roads on the Downs will be closed from from 4am to 8pm on Wednesday:
- Circular Road
- Ladies Mile (From its junction with Stoke Road to its junction with Fountain Hill)
- Rockleaze
- Downleaze
In addition, there will be rolling road closures as the riders arrive in Bristol at around 2.45pm. The roads are expected to be open again by around 3.30pm with closures estimated to last for around 20 minutes as the participants pass by on each road.
The race enters Bristol from the north before making its way west to the River Avon, down the Portway then back up Bridge Valley Road for a steep ascent. On their way they will go by the following roads:
- Southmead Road: From the municipal boundary between South Gloucestershire and the City of Bristol to the junction of Monks Park Road
- Pen Park Road: Its entire length
- Charlton Road: From its junction with Pen Park Road to its junction with Knole Lane
- Knole Lane: Its entire length
- Passage Road: From its junction with Knole Lane to its junction with Crow Lane
- Crow Lane: Its entire length
- Henbury Road: From its junction with Crow Lane to its junction with Kings Weston Road
- Kings Weston Road: Its entire length
- Shirehampton Road: From its junction with Kings Weston Road to its junction with Sylvan Way
- Sylvan Way: From its junction with Shirehampton Road to its junction with Portway
- Portway (Southbound only): From its junction with Sylvan Way to its junction with Hotwell Road
- Bridge Valley Road: Its entire length
- Fountain Hill: Its entire length
Getting there
Cycle parking will be provided at the finish area next to the promotional zone on the Durdham Downs.
Parking and parking restrictions
There will be a car park on the Downs by the Water Tower charging £5 per vehicle. The access point to the car park is at Parrys Lane.
Don’t get caught out as there will be additional parking restrictions to ensure no vehicles are parked in the final 8km of the race. The following parking restrictions will be in force in addition to those that already exist on the roads below:
- Sylvan Way: Both sides between Shirehampton Road and the Portway
- Portway: Sylvan Way to Bridge Valley Road
- Fountain Hill: Bridge Valley Road to Ladies Mile
- Ladies Mile: Both sides for its entire length
- Circular Road: Both sides for its entire length
- Rockleaze: Both sides for its entire length
- Downleaze: North side only

Displays and performances on the Downs
There will be a number of community events on Durdham Downs and a big screen showing ITV4 coverage of Stage 4 between 1pm-4pm
- 11am to 12.30pm British Cycling’s Go Ride
- 12.30pm to 1pm and 1.30pm to 2pm Strictly Cycling performances by the Bicycle Ballet Company
- 1pm to 1.30pm Presentation of the Dymag T-1 – Diabetes racing team a newly formed Bristol based team riding for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
- 1.30pm to 2pm All Ability Inclusive Cycling Challenge with children and young people from Bristol’s Claremont and New Fosseway Special Schools
