Bristol named as UK’s most environmentally friendly city
Bristol has been named the UK’s most environmentally friendly city according to brand new research.
But the city’s latest accolade comes on the same day as another piece of research is published saying that although nature is important to them, more than three quarters of Bristol residents think that they do not spend enough time in nature.
Good Move’s study analysed carbon emissions, recycling levels and energy consumption, alongside green space and Green Party council seats, finding that Bristol consistently ranks among the best in most categories.
is needed now More than ever
The city beat Edinburgh and Bradford to being the keenest recyclers of any UK city with 44 per cent of household waste reused.
Elsewhere, the city falls just short of London when it comes to carbon emissions, producing 1,863,000 tonnes compared to almost five million in Birmingham.

Meanwhile, a new YouGov poll highlights the conflict of Bristol residents who feel that nature is important to them, yet find it hard to connect with it as much as they would like.
Just 22 per cent of the respondents in Bristol said that the last ‘wow’ moment they had with nature was in their local area, while 58 per cent of people’s most recent special moments with nature were from elsewhere such as television, holidays and visits to the countryside.
Just one in 10 Bristolians surveyed had enjoyed a wild place as part of their working day in the last week.
The poll results are released as Avon Wildlife Trust (AWT) launches their 30 Days Wild challenge running throughout June, encouraging people to commit ‘Random Acts of Wildness’ – daily connections with nature – every day for thirty days.
AWT’s Sarah Moore said: “The poll clearly shows how much nature means to people living in Bristol, and how highly people prize the nature and wildlife which surrounds all of us in this unique city.
“Yet it’s clear people feel they don’t spend enough time immersed in nature, enjoying all the benefits it brings.
“30 Days Wild is a fun way for Bristolians to reconnect with everyday nature and enjoy local wildlife every day this June.
“From the peregrines soaring above Avon Gorge to the blackbirds in our parks and gardens, and the hundreds of other plants and animals out there for us all to spot and celebrate, we’re inviting everyone to go wild this June.”
