Bristol names its own Brussels bureaucrat

By Chris Brown  Monday Oct 20, 2014

Bristol now has its very own bureaucrat in Brussels, with the appointment of a born-and-bred Bristolian charged with accessing millions of pounds in European funds.

Paul Davies has spent the past eight years living and working in Brussels, and is Bristol’s first direct representative at the European Union top table.

European funding worth billions of euros will be available to universities, business and cities in the next seven years and Paul’s role is to help ensure that Bristol secures more than its fair share.

He has been appointed on a consultancy basis for up to three years, with the council saying his fees will be in the range of 60-80,000 euros per year including business costs, tax, insurance and phone.

Mayor George Ferguson said: “This appointment represents an important investment and will strengthen our ability to access valuable European and international funding opportunities in the years ahead.”
