Bristol needs a ‘comprehensive’ network of protected cycle lanes
A petition started by the chair of Bristol Cycling Campaign hopes to make Bristol a place where everyone feels safe to cycle.
Ian Pond is calling for the city council to complete and publish an updated plan that he hopes will “include the creation of a comprehensive network of protected cycle lanes connecting all parts of the city”.
He also says that all existing cycle lanes must not be removed.
is needed now More than ever
A cycle lane on Cheltenham Road close to its junction with Ashley Road has recently been removed, with the city council also planning to remove another cycle lane on Whiteladies Road.
Pond wants all cycle lanes in the city to be upgraded to current national standards and made continuous, “so that they are inclusive, accessible and safe for use by young people and adults”.

He added: “The Delivery Plan should include a strategic citywide approach to secure cycle parking both in residential areas (cycle hangars) and at transportation hubs and destinations to contain the rampant bike theft that is occurring.
“Additionally, it should include schemes to increase cycling participation like cycle training, safe cycle routes to schools (and) a cycle loan program.
“Currently there is no plan for cycling despite the 2019 Bristol Transport Strategy committing to the production of an updated Cycling Strategy.”
If Pond’s petition receives more than 3,500 signatures, councillors will debate the issue in a full council meeting.
