Bristol Old Vic
Famous for being the oldest continuously-running theatre in the UK, Bristol Old Vic has recently blown £12million on a comprehensive redevelopment project, making it one of the most modern and comfortable places round these parts to catch a bit of cultcha. As well as atmospherically-lit tunnels to the Pit, a face-lifted bar and “dramatically extended forestage and precision-engineered sightlines” it also has a slightly incongruous popcorn stand in the foyer. Its reputation for supporting experimental new works is well-earned – witness the year-long Ferment development programme and the theatre’s ongoing symbiosis with Mayfest; the building may be ancient, but their programme certainly isn’t.
