Explore the hidden history of Bristol

By Kofo Ajala  Tuesday Jul 21, 2020

More than 40,000 people explored the city through Bristol Open Doors in 2019.

Ordinarily a chance to discover parts of the city normally closed to the public, 2020’s event look a little different in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

This autumn’s event instead take the form of three curated walking tours, called Hidden Bristol, between September 11 and 13 2020.

Each of the three walks, Vibrant Bristol, the Hidden Harbour and Temple Tales, will be guided by a personal audio tour.

This project is being run in partnership with Visit Bristol, Arts Council England and Historic England, celebrating the city and its heritage. Tickets are now on sale for groups of up to 40 guests per walk.

Vibrant Bristol, recorded in Bedminster, explores how colour and street art identity help shape Bristol’s identity, the Hidden Harbour is curated by current city poet Vanessa Kisuule and Temple Tales explores the ruins of Temple Quarter.

“We have been busy on lockdown working with audio designers, artists and historians to create a living history of the city’s spaces,” explains Dr Anna Rutherford, director at Bristol Open Doors.

“Each Hidden Bristol tour already features characters from all corners of the city and we’re launching a three-week campaign today to invite people to share their experiences and stories to add into the project.”

The team is inviting people to share and perspectives ahead of each walk. People can give their opinions on murals and art across the area using the hashtag #VibrantBristol, the history of the harbourside using the hashtag #HiddenHarbour, and #TempleTales can be used to share memories of the area.

Tickets are now on sale for Hidden Bristol at www.bristolopendoors.org.uk.
