Bristol pays tribute to Jo Cox
Tributes have been paid to murdered MP Jo Cox from her parliamentary colleagues across Bristol.
Bristol South MP Karin Smyth said: “Jo was elected in May 2015, part of the new intake of MPs. After her shocking murder, many people will pay tribute to Jo’s qualities as a politician, and so they should for she was one of the brightest, but I feel the raw, personal loss of a colleague and friend.
“The 2015 intake is a close group, spending time together in Parliament and outside and we were together only this week at a social gathering, belatedly marking our first year together in the Commons.
is needed now More than ever
“Following this devastating tragedy I know the thoughts of people across Bristol and the whole world are with Jo’s husband, Brendan, and her two lovely young children.”
Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said: “My sympathies are with the family, friends and colleagues of Jo Cox following yesterday’s horrendous attack.
“Today is a day of sadness and one in which we can reflect upon the life of someone who dedicated their time to their family and the people they represented. Her lifelong record of public service through her charity work then as a member of parliament is testament to the commitment Jo held to being there for others.
A book of condolence was opened in Bristol Central Library on Friday afternoon.
Writing on Facebook, Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie said: “There are no words that suffice for real horror or grief – I know that. But our hearts and prayers with Jo Cox’s family tonight and for the nightmare months and yes, years to come, long after it has fallen off the headlines.
“And in action, let’s make Jo Cox’s legacy that of obliterating hate with kindness and understanding – especially for those we find it hardest to like, love or care for. Let that be our tribute to this brave, bright, beautiful light so diabolically extinguished today.”
North Somerset MP Liam Fox tweeted: “We are all shocked by the news of Jo Cox’s murder. A truly senseless waste which worst of all leaves two young children without their mother.”
