Bristol prepares for second lockdown

By Bristol24/7  Sunday Nov 1, 2020

Pubs, restaurants, gyms and non-essential shops will all have to close in Bristol and across England from Thursday, but schools, colleges and universities will remain open.

Prime minister Boris Johnson’s U-turn has been made to combat growing coronavirus infections across the country.

MPs will vote on the proposals on Wednesday. If approved, the measures will be introduced at one minute past midnight the next day and remain in place until December 2.

Business West managing director, Phil Smith, said that the impact of a month’s restrictions on businesses “will ripple throughout the economy and will be shattering for those forced to close”.

He said: “Many companies have worked hard to make their workplaces and services Covid-safe. So, as necessary as this seems to be, it will be a bitter disappointment to all and ruinous for some.”

These are the proposed new lockdown rules from Thursday:

  • People will be told to stay at home except for education, work (if it can’t be done from home), exercise and recreation, medical reasons, shopping for food and other essentials, or to care for others
  • All pubs and restaurants will have to close (takeaways and deliveries can continue)
  • All non-essential shops will have to close (supermarkets can sell non-essential goods)
  • Households will not be allowed to mix with others indoors, or in private gardens
  • Individuals can meet one person from outside their household in an outside public space
  • Support bubbles for people who live alone and households made up of single parents and children can continue
  • Children will be able to move between homes if their parents are separated
  • Schools, colleges and universities will remain open
  • Workplaces will be asked to stay open if people cannot work from home – including construction and manufacturing
  • Outdoor exercise and recreation will be allowed, but gyms will have to close
  • Clinically vulnerable advised not to go to work if they are unable to work from home

After December 2, different regions will return to the tiers one to three, depending upon the rates of infection, with Bristol currently in our unique tier of 1+.
