Bristol Rovers issue statement after Joey Barton appears in court
Bristol Rovers Football Club released a statement after Joey Barton appeared in court accused of assault.
Attending Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court via video link on Monday, the manager pleaded not guilty to the charge of attacking his wife. A trial date has been set for December 16.
Rovers have said Barton will not lead the team for the friendly against Havant and Waterlooville on Tuesday, with Clint Hill stepping up instead.

A spokesperson for Bristol Rovers Football Club said in a statement: “With regard to manager Joey Barton’s court appearance by video link this morning, the club has been informed that the matter is proceeding to trial and is, therefore, sub judicial.”

The statement continued: “Following the weekend’s publicity and today’s court appearance Joey is taking a few days personal time to be with his family.
“Clint Hill will therefore lead the team for tomorrow night’s friendly against Havant and Waterlooville.”
The full statement has not been printed for legal reasons.
In a second statement published on the club’s website, the president of Bristol Rovers, Wael al-Qadi “wholeheartedly apologised” for the former statement.
In an open letter, he reaffirmed the clubs position against domestic violence, saying: “We in no way meant to belittle charges of domestic abuse.”
