Bristol veteran completes 265km mountain race

By Rachel Morris  Tuesday Apr 28, 2015

Retired Bristol soldier Martyn Bird has completed a 265km race in the punishing heat and altitude of the Portuguese mountains of Estrela National Park.

The 57-year-old is a former Major with the Royal Military Police, and has taken part in several ‘ultramarathons’ (read: hardcore), but this could be his last, he says.

Martyn is raising money for the charity Community Self Build, an organisation which helps people in need of housing to build their own homes, and who piloted a project for ex-servicemen and women in Bristol in 2011.

The project, which took a year, saw ex-service personnel build 10 units on West Street, Bedminster to be occupied by ex-service. The charity continues to support projects across Bristol, Bath and Weston-super-Mare.

Martyn says: “I’ve seen first-hand the selfless dedication to duty of the men and women of our Forces serving their country but now finding themselves in need of support.”

He has already raised over £2000 on his Just Giving page, but he hopes his efforts will raise the profile of the charity.
