Bristol24/7 to host mayoral hustings at the end of April
With less than 30 days before Bristol votes for a regional mayor, Bristol24/7 is pleased to announce more details for the second of two hustings that will be taking place in partnership with Watershed.
The Bristol mayoral hustings will be livestreamed via YouTube from 7pm on Thursday, April 29.
Nine candidates are standing for the position of Bristol mayor, the role currently held by Labour’s Marvin Rees. All have been invited to partake in the hustings.
is needed now More than ever
Rees will stand again for Labour, hoping to retain the position he has held since 2016.
He will stand against Conservative Alastair Watson, who replaced initial candidate Samuel Williams after he decided to instead try for WECA mayor.
Dr Caroline Gooch, who wants to abolish the role of mayor, is standing for the Lib Dems, and Creative Youth Network CEO Sandy Hore-Ruthven will stand for the Green Party.
Tom Baldwin, who has twice run for the city’s top job, will once again be standing on an anti-austerity platform, with the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition candidate saying: “Bristol needs a mayor who will stand up for the working class”.
Robert Clarke will be running for Reform UK, and three independent candidates are also vying for mayor.
Little is known about independent Oska Shaw, but John Langley, who ran in the 2016 mayoral election, hopes to make Bristol “fully inclusive” and Sean Donnelly, outspoken landlord of the Three Lions in Bedminster says he “wants Bristol back”.
Each of the candidates will be given specific time limits in which to speak and answer questions.
Bristol24/7 Editor Martin Booth will be hosting the Bristol mayoral hustings on April 29. The evening will be introduced by Watershed CEO Clare Reddington.
“We’re really excited to be hosting the mayoral hustings in partnership with Bristol247,” says Clare.
“Leadership from the mayor in championing, protecting and amplifying Bristol’s culture sector is hugely important – so we are keen to share their thoughts on this vital topic and it’s a privilege to be able to beam the event live from Watershed.”
Candidates will be asked a variety of questions by Booth and by audience members, with questions able to be submitted to editor@bristol247.com in advance.
Emails should have the subject line ‘Mayoral Hustings’ and include your name and which area of Bristol you live in. Questions can also be submitted live on the night via YouTube’s chat function.
