Bristol’s ‘food busk’ for homelessness

By Ellie Pipe  Monday Jan 22, 2018

Among the sights and sounds of Bristol’s harbourside, there will soon be a tantalising new aroma of culinary delights.

Farmdrop’s team will be taking to the streets armed with kitchen utensils to sell their wares from Friday, January 26 to Thursday, February 1, in a bid to raise money for homelessness charity St Mungo’s.

The ethical grocer will be offering hot drinks and juices each morning, followed by hot stews and casseroles for lunch, and customers have the opportunity to pay what they think the produce is worth.

Hot stews and casseroles will be served from The Spin Bar

The ‘food busk’ will take place at The Spin Bar in the Harbour Inlet opposite the SS Great Britain, and organisers hope the event will also increase awareness of food waste.

“January can be a blue time of the year,” says Farmdrop’s founder Ben Pugh.

“The Bristol food busk is an opportunity to put a smile on people’s faces with some delicious fresh food from some of Bristol’s best local producers.

“We hope to raise a lot of money for St Mungo’s because they do tremendous work keeping people off the streets.”

Those inspired by the culinary theme can also sign up for a series of tasting and cookery classes, including beer pairing with Moor Beer on Friday, January 26, a fermentation class with Bath Culture House on Saturday, January 27 and a pasta workshop with Little Hollows Pasta on Tuesday, January 30.

To finish the week in style, Farmdrop is hosting two Zero Waste Supper Clubs on Wednesday, January 31 and Thursday, February 1, in collaboration with Poco, Elly Pear and Nutmeg.

Designed by some of Bristol’s top culinary experts, and continuing the food busk theme, the menu will use food waste generated during the week to create a three-course menu, with diners paying what they feel the dishes are worth.

Guests can guarantee their seat with a £5 deposit.

Jayne Hughes, St Mungo’s fundraising coordinator, said: “It’s such a lovely and unique way to capture people’s attention. We hope the Bristol public will call into The Spin Bar and help Farmdrop raise vital funds to keep people safer off the streets and into somewhere warm.”
