Bus design commemorating Bristol Bus Boycott unveiled

By Edie Attridge  Wednesday Aug 30, 2023

A new bus design has been revealed, commemorating 60 years since the end of the Bristol Bus Boycott.

After being unveiled at Lawrence Hill Bus Depot on Wednesday morning, the bus journeyed around Bristol and took its passengers to notable black history spots across the city.

Alissa Thaler, an Italian illustrator and animator, won a competition by First Bus for artists to design the bus.

She based her design on the storyline of events that led to the overturning of a ban on bus operators employing black and Asian people.

The bus unveiling is just one of many events taking place across the city on Wednesday to mark the bus boycott.

A city tour aboard the bus and a ceremony honouring and thanking the Bristol Bus Boycott pioneers at St Mary Redcliffe Church are among the other activities.
