Call for Bernie Sanders to speak on College Green

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Apr 21, 2017

A growing number of people in Bristol are calling for Bernie Sanders to speak on College Green while he is in the city this summer.

Tickets to see the veteran US politician and activist in St George’s sold out in under an hour after Bristol24/7 exclusively announced he will be here as part of the Festival of Ideas on June 3.

After failing to secure a ticket herself, Rachel Groom, a Sanders fan and events professional, launched a campaign for the man she describes as “arguably the world’s most popular progressive politician” to address the masses and rally against hate and unfairness.

Her bid to give more people in Bristol a chance to hear the US Senator speak is fast gaining momentum and while it is little more than a pipe dream at the moment, she is already in touch with Bristol City Council and is attempting to contact Sanders’ team.

The St George resident said “I think he is an absolute legend. I know St George’s said the tickets sold at an unprecedented rate and it got me thinking ‘surely he will do something else when he is here.”

Groom admits she does not know if the campaign is realistic but says she believes if the event can be organised, a non-political group such as the Bristol People’s Assembly should be the host.

Now serving his second term in the US Senate, Sanders also has a New York Times bestseller, Our Revolution: A future to believe in, under his belt and will share experiences, ideas and strategies that shaped his campaign when he speaks at St George’s.

Drawing on decades of experience as an activist and public servant, the veteran speaker will outline his ideas for continuing this revolution, arguing for a progressive economic, environmental, racial and social justice agenda that creates jobs, raises wages and protects the planet.

Groom believes there is a need for a progressive speaker such as Sanders at a time when our shared values are both challenged and desperately needed.
