Care assistant wins domestic violence award
Rose Lockhart, a care assistant at Southmead Hospital’s Emergency Department, has been presented with The Ann Wood Award for supporting victims of domestic violence.
Her “outstanding contribution to tackling domestic abuse in South Gloucestershire” and her “determination and dedication” has earned her the award.
With one woman in the UK killed every three days by a current or former partner, it is imperative that domestic violence victims come forward. However, a woman is assaulted an average of 35 times before she calls the police.

The South Gloucestershire Partnership Against Domestic Abuse presents the award each year. During her acceptance speech, Rose credited her colleague, Anna Harper, who won the award in 2014.
Rose said: “I think it’s massively important for us to protect our men and women. Domestic violence and abuse is obviously not acceptable and we don’t want to people to feel that they are slipping through the net.
“I was totally overwhelmed to receive the award. This is just my job. It’s what I do. I didn’t realise I was thought of so highly by my colleagues, I thought I was the same as the next person,” she added.
Emergency department consultant Adam Brown was also honoured for his commitment to the victims of domestic violence with an Excellence in Practice certificate.
Domestic violence charity, Survive, provided training for staff in the department. The training aims to help employees to feel comfortable approaching the subject with potential victims, as well as understanding how to provide advice on the next steps for victims.
