Chance & Counters: gaming cafe bids for funds

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Jan 14, 2016

Three entrepreneurs are turning to crowdfunding to help launch Bristol’s first boardgaming cafe.

Chance & Counters will open at the foot of the Christmas Steps in March if owners can reach their £10,000 target.

The team of board game aficionados Steve Cownie, Luke Neal and Richard Scarsbrook were already 75 per cent into their target after just four days of fundraising.

In their pitch to investors they said they believe the increase in social media and smartphones is creating a demand for a new venue where friends can “come together to chat, compete and co-operate face-to-face”.

The café plans to stock over 200 games and serve food and alcohol. Customers will pay a cover charge to choose from Chance & Counters’ collection of games: £4 per person for non-members, £2.50 for standard members and free on weekdays for premium members.

“Board games have long been an awesome way to spend time with friends; we don’t buy the idea that it’s a nostalgic fad or some kind of hipster craze,” said co-founder Steve Cownie.
