Change the record

By Sofi Carter  Wednesday Feb 22, 2017

Having called Stokes Croft home for six years, one of Bristol’s last remaining record shops will soon be moving to 32 City Road in St Paul’s.

Idle Hands owner Chris Farrell (above) is looking forward to the move: “It’s got a slightly different vibe. It’s very fresh, it’s very bright, a bit airier: the air’s better out of the pollution! It’s just a slightly nicer space.”

The current premises on Stokes Croft

For those who will go nowhere else to spend hours flipping through vast record collections, have no fear, you won’t be left high and dry for long.

Idle Hands will be reopening in its new home at the beginning of March, and only a two minute meander away from its current home.

The new, bigger space will allow for an even greater collection of music.

Whilst Chris has prided himself on predominantly providing records for DJs, he has come to realise over the past few years that ever more people are buying records to listen to at home and the new shop will allow him to provide for those people as well.

Idle Hands’ new home

The old Idle Hands space will be taken over by Elevator Sound, who currently inhabit the back part of the shop allowing them to have a more prominent space on Stokes Croft, says Chris, as well as allowing himself the opportunity to switch things up.

Having built up a reputation for himself and the brand, Chris will continue doing what he loves, selling records and being your one-stop-shop for vinyl, just in a new haunt.

“Hopefully we’re established enough now that people are going to be happy enough to walk 30 seconds up City Road”, he laughs.

“We just want to freshen things up a little bit.”
