Charity launches ambitious fundraising target to tackle food insecurity
With one in six Bristol households facing food insecurity, Square Food Foundation is embarking on a fundraising mission to help those struggling to get by.
The Knowle West-based charity hopes to raise £28,400 in a week to pay for recipe kits that provide families with everything they need to cook healthy meals.
Square Food bosses say the number of people facing food insecurity across the city has risen from this time last year, and is only expected to increase.

They believe everyone should have access and the skills to prepare healthy, affordable food. As well as teaching adults and children to cook, the charity sends out some 200 recipe kits every week to local families. Each kit contains fresh ingredients to cook a healthy meal from scratch, a recipe card to use again and tips on cooking efficiently and economically.

Alice Morrison, fundraising and communications manager at Square Food Foundation, said: “This winter we are aiming to raise a total of £28,400. In order to access the £14,200 we have in the matching pot, we need to raise £14,200 in online donations.
“One in six households in Bristol are experiencing food insecurity, a massive increase from last year and one that is expected to rise. We hope everyone will give generously this year to help us reach our target and enable us to feed families this winter.”

One food worker commented on the project, saying: “The fact that kits are fresh will give our families a much needed vitamin boost and show what can be achieved with very little ingredients really. The kits will give them a sense of achievement and a love of cooking and they may come up with their own ideas too. This project is so exciting.”
