Christmas drink drivers named and shamed

By Chris Brown  Friday Dec 5, 2014

Drivers in Bristol caught over the limit this Christmas will be named and shamed by police.

As part of the annual Christmas drink-driving campaign, anyone ordered to appear in court on suspicion of having committed a drink- or drug-driving offence will have their names and details published online and made available to the media.

The move follows that of other forces throughout the country and is part of the Operation Tonic campaign launched earlier this week.

Superintendent Richard Corrigan from Avon and Somerset police said: “People who drink- or drug-drive have made a deliberate choice to ignore 50 years of warnings and messages about the dangers. It is not ignorance. Hopefully, knowing that your name will be publicised will act as an additional strong deterrent to getting behind the wheel having consumed alcohol or drugs.”

Police have said they will be stepping up patrols during the mornings throughout December to catch those who are still over the drink-drive limit after drinking the night before.
