Bristol blows its own trumpet
Bristol is set to become the first city in the UK to have its own official fanfare.
The fanfare will be composed ahead of 2016 – a significant year for the city which marks, among others, the 800th anniversary of the first mayor of Bristol and the 250th anniversary of the Bristol Old Vic.
Bristol Proms, which will be held at the Old Vic in July, launched the competition to compose the fanfare with a special performance on Wednesday at Paddington station.
is needed now More than ever
Alison Balsom, one of the world’s top trumpeters and among the stars of this year’s Bristol Proms, performed Benjamin Britten’s Fanfare for St Edmundsbury for morning commuters.
Composers have the chance to win a £1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to have their work performed by professional musicians.
Bristol mayor George Ferguson said: “When you think about how evocative and powerful a stirring fanfare can be, it’s astonishing that all cities don’t have one of their own.”
Old Vic artistic director Tom Morris added: “A fanfare is a song of celebration written for the thrilling voice of the trumpet. We are delighted to be able to host a competition in conjunction with the invigorating Bristol Proms for a fanfare to celebrate the extraordinary qualities and spirit of this magical city. Bristol deserves a fanfare. Maybe every city does.”
Bristol Proms is calling for submissions for a work lasting no more than four minutes and scored for three trumpets by June 1, 2015 to be judged by a panel of classical musicians and leading creatives. For details on how to enter the fanfare competition, visit www.bristololdvic.org.uk/proms2015.
