Suspension Bridge to close for three days

By Giulia Stella  Tuesday Mar 1, 2016

Clifton Suspension Bridge will be closed to traffic for restoration work for three days starting on Monday.

Vehicles and cyclists are being diverted from Monday, March 14, to Wednesday, March 16, between 9.30am and 4.00pm each day to allow scaffolding to be erected on the Leigh Woods tower.

A diversion for traffic will be signed, using Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and A369 Rownham Hill.

The road will remain open overnight and during the morning and evening peak periods to minimize the inconvenience.

David Anderson, bridge master, said: “During these bridge closures pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge. However, cycling will be prohibited as maintenance work will be taking place on the bridge.

“Cyclists may dismount and walk across the bridge. However, as only one narrow foot way will be open they are requested to avoid using the bridge if possible”.

The work began at the end of February following an inspection that revealed the necessity to intervene on the walls and the red stone abutments of the towers as well as the girders under the bridge deck.
